At Evil Genius Games, Gen Con marks a tidal shift in our full focus toward new and exciting projects. And we really have a lot going on. A couple of weeks ago, I invited Sig Trent in to talk about The Armory, which had a successful Gamefound and is now headed for the finish line. A week ago I interviewed Awen Rowan-Nelson, PhD, about ethics and crafting the new Technology Code of Ethics as a professional ethicist. Today, I’ve invited Bryan CP Steele, fresh off Gen Con and a victory lap for his part in a Judges Spotlight Ennie for Essence20 Field Guide for Action & Adventure, to bring us up to speed on REDEMPTION and Intergalactic Heroes. And in a couple of weeks, we’ll have Goober Ramsley in to talk Everyday Arcana. So, keep an eye on the Evil Genius Games journal, where news and interviews give you an inside look into the people and projects of the Everyday Heroes multiverse.
E: Thanks for coming on to do an interview Bryan. I know it’s been a busy post-Gen Con week. But speaking of Gen Con, you ran the multitable Doors and Shadows. How did it go?
B: It was great! We had a full table of characters that were specifically E.G.O.-built characters, a table full of first-timers, and two tables of higher-level characters.
E: That sounds like a really good group and, from what I hear, a lot of fun.
B: We were really happy with the turnout. While it wasn’t a full house, it was a great showing given that REDEMPTION Assignments 7, 8, and 9 haven’t been run yet outside of Gen Con events yet. I got to narrate the between-Act moments and mustache twirl a little bit, and I’m a huge ham…so I had a blast. The players really seemed to enjoy it, too, and that is the most important thing.
[Editors note: We’re making a few tweaks that Bryan suggested after running the game for the first time, and looking forward to doing Doors and Shadows again. If any GMs are interested in organizing a multi-table at a convention to give this a whirl, please shoot me an email at [email protected] and let’s talk.]
E: Indeed, it is! And like I said, I’ve only had glowing reports from players and GMs. Now, even though a lot of our REDEMPTION GMs and players are still working their way through the REDEMPTION Season 1 adventures, could you give folks a bit of a teaser as to what they have to look forward to after the Season 1 finale in REDEMPTION Assignment 9: Stained Glass?
B: Oh, wow. Without giving away too much, the worlds are our oyster! REDEMPTION has allies out there that need help, and Walt DeWalt has quite a few leads on some really interesting places to go and people to send agents to work with. We tackled some of the greats in Season 1 Assignments: the weight of social media influence, video games, giant spiders, robot sharks, mad scientists…you know, the important stuff. And that’s just Season One. When people find out what kind of Pandora’s Box gets opened up for Season 2, the sky really is the limit. Let’s just say I have been watching a LOT of Archer, Venture Bros., and Sliders to get us ready for it all.
E: I can’t wait to get these new REDEMPTION adventures out there and have folks begin to see where we’re going with this. But turning to other things, there’s been a lot of posts coming out lately on our Patreon and elsewhere about your baby, Intergalactic Heroes. There’s been a lot of developments, and a lot going on with moving this project forward. Can you kind of sum up where the project is at the moment, and what comes next?
B: IGH—as the cool kids call it—is basically the roleplaying game product equivalent of a race car that we’re building. We have been building and tweaking and getting it ready to race for a long time, and now it is idling at the starting line, waiting for the green light. Meanwhile, our pit crew, the playtesters and the Patrons, are helping us test the engine for knocks, wheezes, and other automotive-related metaphors that I’m probably using incorrectly.
E: (Lol) But the point is, Interga…IGH is nearly ready for the track.
B: Exactly. Basically, the rules are looking very good, the book is written and simply needs testing and cleaning up while we assemble art and layout assets. Then we get this beast to Editing.
E: And you have lots of help in getting this ready in the final stages from fans, it seems?
B: Yes. That is where the Open Beta Document has already been super helpful. Finding things that look right to us but are unclear to fans is key, because it shows us where the language needs to be clarified. Also, the Discord-based playtesters have started to make their playtest IGH heroes and are going to be hurled into short-form playtest scenarios in the near future.
E: That’s really exciting. So, with all of this in motion, what’s the timeline for production?
B: We’re hoping to bring the Intergalactic Heroes Player’s Guide to crowdfunding in early 2025, and then use those funds to smash the product through publication in order to get books into the hands of fans the same year. Fingers, dendrites, and pseudopods crossed for luck, of course.
E: Yes, good luck (knocks wood)! But at least as of right now, things seem on track.
B: For sure. In fact, we are so confident in this product that we are already talking to media production companies about the first Cinematic licenses that will be joining our own cooked-in setting, such as The Throneworld Saga in the IGH product line. Long story short, I am psyched for the future of Intergalactic Heroes!
E: Me, too! Thanks for coming on and giving us a look over the horizon with both REDEMPTION and IGH. We’ve got lots of great things to come.
